SEEING IS BELIEVING - SHADOWS

So the last entry\ about our third 7" release Heavy Sigh/Rainbows ended with the promise of the story behind our 5th release, 'Chasing Christmas' to be up next.

Amazingly we let a single slip by.........seriously??.......so many singles in such little time.

SIDE A

'Seeing is Believing' started with a overheard loop from a piece of music on a nondescript charity shop LP.  Over time we've noticed how many versions of the original track there are!!!  It's that thing where until you actually start listening out for it, you hardly notice how many times it's been covered.....and probably sampled...not as well as us though!....oh come on?

It's still a rather delicate area for us to start naming the source but lets face it, those who know, know! so theres no point.  So the track was sampled, two separate bars, arranged then shelved for about 6 months. Standard practice of course.

The new studio was based in Kensal Town West London, just off the Ladbroke Grove, the far end before Kensal Green gets started.  Home to a multitude of Caribbean take-aways.  In fact the dinner of choice, and sometimes lunch was a deep fried, potato, onion and spice doughnut.  Sounds grim but this culinary delight meant that you didn't have to think about eating again for at least another 24 hrs.  Heavy to hold and always washed down with a cold can of Red Stripe, Lets carry on with talking about the music....jeeeez..

So the next tinker would involve writing a song over the arranged piece that'd been roughly cobbled together. Getting some vocals and harms down then taking it from there. Dan got going on this during an evening of madness holed up in the studio, a couple of hours before his night bus back to Brixton, probably on a School night.  It's a shady period and one you'll need to ask him about when you see him.   On the next get-together, we both got to working on fixing up the arrangement and Vox levels with Miles spending some more time feeling out those elusive sonics. No deep fried donoughts that day, probably a sausage sandwhich.......

Anyways!....

We got it done pretty bloody quick and it sounded great straight away...well it did to us and we're usually right. It was a short while until we played what we had to our closest confidants and then nobody else got a look-in until we pressed up the 7".  And even that was a slow burn.

Apart from 'Would it be Impossible', over time, it's become one of the most favoured Superimposers songs from our 'first' album.  It's cropped up on numerous comps, TV programs and what nots in the past and once when half of Manchester, led by his Royal Highness, Moonboots, journeyed down to one of our gigs at the 3 Kings Public house in Clerkenwell, there were people jumping up on the tables when we played it. It was great ,we could've ended the gig there.
Whilst we're on the subject of The 3 Kings, we have to extend our appreciation to Deke Eicher who allowed us to finely tune our live set in the form of a night we would do every month on a Saturday. We popped in to ask whether we could put a gig on, he was pretty wary, asked if it would be a loud because he couldn't be bothered with that sort of nonsense and fair play to him for agreeing to give us a trial. Deke would DJ, set us up with ales and generally make us feel at home. Top bloke, top pub.

SIDE B

'Shadows' may have been one of the last few sample heavy tracks we embarked on but once again it worked too well to pass up, we had to throw caution to the wind on this one too!

Two loops from the same side of an LP from two different tracks. The same key as well? YES SIR! The details of the sampled tracks we used are a little hazy, ahem,  locked away in the Wondefulsound vaults for future astronauts to find whilst on an expedition far into the future.

To be fair, we did layer a fair amount of Wonderfulsound magic over this track to get it sounding good, keys, guitars, wobbly stuff, white noise etc and whilst the music was being mixed, the lyrics were being written down frantically between mouthfuls of Potato Doughnut on an A4 writing pad. We'd also recently acquired a late Fifties 'Shure Bullet Mic', which we used on the vocals for 'Shadows', 'Seeing' and a couple of other tracks. We bought it off a 'Borough Cat' and over time found that the Crystal technology contained within this little metal beauty, provided us with just the right amount of grit needed.

At this point we'd moved studios down the hall. It was a bigger joint, with a main room and an odd layout with a vocal booth built in which provided great privacy when we had guests. We had a drum kit set up too, coutesy of our old friend Barney who would spend time with us on the Mac G3, in a very patient manner being a gent and all that, helping us fine honing the current artwork for whatever single we had ready to go at that time. We were gigging with Barney at that point to, all guitars, drums and keys until we gradually filtered it down to the two piece..... .that's another story.

So......'Shadows' needed a mix...we'd been to see Lone Pigeon the previous night at Spits in London, it was weird and great and there may have been a hangover of that feeling that crept into the quickness of completing the track that day. For us, 'Shadows' turned into a surf movie theme or a Jack Nitzsche B-Side, anyway we loved it and stuck it on the flip of 'Seeing is Believing'. The rest is all History.

Next up.....'Chasing Christmas'......honest!

Once again like the reliability of an old Volkswagen, we are pleased to announce the release (or re-release or re-re release how ever you want to view it) of our seasonal EP, 'Christmas Again!'

Kicking off with the 'eventual' hit, 'Christmas Again!' followed by the Shawn Lee narrated, 'Chasing Xmas' which jingles into the music box version of 'Would it be Impossible' entitled, ahem....'Would it be Christmas'..!..and then we take a real vacation down in Honalulu with 'Xmas in Hawaii'

'Christmas Again!' will be continually released each year until the song becomes as familiar in peoples minds as the steam off a Christmas pudding, the smell of mulled wine, the cracking of crackers and perhaps the punctuality of the Queens speech.

A short while back, we were asked to remix a track for Jed And Lucia and we said yes.  The end result?  Sounds like The Superimposers jamming on the beach with Astrid Gilberto in the Adriatics

Jed and Lucia are a Brooklyn based act whose record Label, Ubiquity is also home to our very own soul brother, Shawn Lee.

HEAVY SIGH - RAINBOWS

During the summer of 2003 the hunt was on for a new studio space to house The Superimposers.  Up until this point, Wonderfulsound had been based in Central London right next door to Death in Vegas' Contino Rooms.  We had to hold off recording vocals here one afternoon as Dan kept being put off by some bloke belting out his vocals in the booth next door, seemingly trying out his best Liam Gallagher impression. We headed off to the Jerusalem Public House for a breather. It was unlikely we would return for work. Turns out it was Liam.

To cut a very long story short we moved away from the Contino Rooms and and ended up renting a first floor room in a 15th Century cottage in the heart of the New Forest in a village called Sway.  We hoiked the Fender Rhodes up the tiny, left handed stairwell, plugged it all in and got cracking.  Single number three was completed here. Heavy Sigh / Rainbows.

Picture the scene. A Thatched Cottage in the New Forest, 100 yards from a real Ale pub, lots of fresh Tea & Scones on hand, two singles under our belt already that year, a beautiful surrounding area, stray ponys, babbling brooks and more importantly........fish and chips.

The details are a little hazy but we already had the bare bones of both Heavy Sigh & Rainbow but they both needed arranging overdubbing and some Wonderfulsound magic desperately needed.  Did we mention there was a real ale pub close by? This was going to be a slow process....

Sonically the room sounded wonderful great for mixing and recording with all the hay in the roof, woody beams and the surrounding rural, wooded area along with the emergence of butterflies as we mixed the final Rainbows....(hence the inspiration for the sleeve)  which contributed towards the harmonious feel. Many an hour was lost in this room up in the clouds.

The adjacent room was a toilet which we used for a vocal booth, (out of bounds during recording sessions of course!)  Very inspirational.

We did work on other music during our time in the forest as the surrounding area continued to inspire us even more but the main focus was the 3rd single which we managed to nail over the course of the three months we spent up in the rafters. It was then time to move on and find another home.

Single # 3 turned out to be a very well received 7" which introduced us to a wider audience. One of these audience members was one John Stammers from Chorlton-cum-Hardy whom we exchanged singles with around the time of his debut, 'Ivy & Dennis'.  Apparently John was so impressed with "Heavy Sigh" that he briefly gave up writing music for 5 minutes, or in the time it takes to boil the kettle for a "brew".  We were equally taken with Johns offering too and a musical friendship was born which continues to this day.

So that was the story of our third Single. Next up, 'Chasing Christmas' and Manchester's own 'Moonboots' buying up ten copies which instantly catapulted us into the Chorlton/Leveshulme Balearic Top Ten.

Mojo Cover Mount CD - Pet Sounds Revisited - June Issue

So for the second time running, The Superimposers were asked if they'd like to contribute some music for a Mojo Cover mount CD. Once again, it involved the 'Fab Five' and this time it would mean producing a cover version of 'Trombone Dixie', an out-take from The Beach Boys Album Pet Sounds.

This was no mean feat but a welcomed challenge and as the Wonderfulsound studio Brass section was not available, we thought it fitting to break out the Omnichord instead. We're pretty pleased with the result and like to think we've captured the essence of Brian Wilsons vision in our own inimitable style....even if we do say so ourselves!

"..new Superimposers single sounds great....is there gonna be a Vinyl?"

We've noticed that hot on the tails of each Superimposers release there appears to follow a unanimous call for a vinyl format.  Now we of course love vinyl and from past experience can't think of a more satisfying feeling than a newly manufactured vinyl disc arriving in the post.

However, these things don't come cheap and John Stammers is already demanding that his next LP be released on Laser Disc...

So this is what we propose to do.  Our new EP "People" is out this month as a digital download along with a limited number of handmade CDs but many people have requested a vinyl release too!  If we can guarantee over the next few weeks that enough people would be interested in buying a limited edition 3 track 10" of the new E.P. "People" then we'll get some pressed up.

The 10" will be numbered and very limited, 250.  (NO REPRESS!) A complimentary MP3 download will also be included.

CHRISTMAS AGAIN!

Once again like the reliability of an old Volkswagen, we are pleased to announce the release (or re-release, how ever you want to view it) of our seasonal EP, 'Christmas Again!' 2011.

WOULD IT BE IMPOSSIBLE ..with Free Ringtone!

Sometime during the ever lasting tweak of our first single ‘Over The Bridge’, more new tracks were beginning to take shape, slowly but surely.

SIDE A

‘Would It Be Impossible’ became the second Superimposers 7” release and would prove to ‘have legs’.  We realised we had something going on with this Superimposers lark although Would It Be Impossible nearly didn’t happen at all.  The idea started with a sample from an LP found in a dusty Dorset charity shop, released by some far flung Asian artist that no-one seemed to have heard of, especially us!  Dans weekly root through his local thrift store found him digging deeper and crossing fingers that the next Readers Digest record would contain the ultimate break.   One record in particular caught his eye but never quite made it back to the studio. Until one day felling sorry for it he thought that

1) it needed a home
2) it had been sat there for quite sometime
3) the CBS label was all in chinese typface
4) the girl on the cover was pretty
5) it actually could be quite good!

Thankfully, contained on the album were two separate samples on two different tracks that seemed to fit together and were in the same key!  There was a rather eerie sound to these loops, you could tell there was a great song dying to break out. So we chopped the samples up, arranged them adding instrumentation & FX.  The Roland Space Echo also came into play at this point which you can here at the end of the track. It adds a sense of Psychedelic urgency! The Fender Rhodes begins to get used in full effect, adds to the overall sound and acts as the sonic anchor.  For the first time we felt really confident that this song & music was finished!

It was released, once again on a limited run of 500 copies, found its way onto the Wall Of Sound, ‘We Love You’ compilation that year alongside the likes of The Scissor Sisters and the track continues to be The Superimposers anthem to this day.  We always enjoy playing it live and if you were ever lucky enough to pick up an original copy with the blue background and white lino cut Swan, then like us you’d agree it is a beautiful and (now very rare) thing to behold!

SIDE AA

The Flip Side to this single was ‘The Lovely Sky Boat’. Here we had a challenge. This was one of the first attempts at constructing a piece of music without the heavy use of samples which up until this point, was an idea we hadn’t really entertained.  The song was inspired by Alice Coltrane and the lyrics contained are inspired by and reflect our feelings towards this incredible woman.  The whole process of this track was built upon in a new temporary Wonderfulsound home (Miles' home actually) an emergency set up whilst waiting for a new studio space to come up. There have been many since then!

Miles personally laboured the mix down in between inspirational visits to the Jerusalem Tavern and you could just hear that ‘this was the one’.  It was quite a magical moment and became a firm favourite of our new and ever growing catalogue of songs.

Our second 7” single was complete and within weeks of it being in the shops we began to hear it broadcasted on Sean Rowleys Joy of Music show and a BBC live session followed tout suite... which of course is a whole different story altogether.

'Yeah Yeah Yeah' - The Beatles And Bournemouth

Our friend and long time Superimposers supporter Nick Churchill has his first book released on the 22nd September entitled, 'Yeah Yeah Yeah - The Beatles and Bournemouth'. The book concentrates on the Beatles connection with the seaside town - the numerous gigs performed at the Gaumont Theatre, The 'With The Beatles' album cover (shot in Bournemouth) George Harrisons penning of 'Don't Bother Me' whilst holed up in a hotel in the town and also the bungalow which John Lennon bought his Aunt Mimi and the regular visits he made to her up until relocating to New York. The book also contains many unseen pictures and unheard anecdotes associated with the band and Bournemouth, certainly enough to keep any Beatle nut amused for a few hours!
